Leather dye colour preview
See how a bag might look in a different colour, starting from a photo of a real calfskin bag we restored to its original colour. If you find a colour you like, mention its name when you message us.
Original (restored piece)Why only darker colours
Dye can only take leather darker than its current colour, so the preview above only offers colours darker than the original grey.

How bag re-dyeing works
Changing a colour is less about painting and more about preparing the leather again.
Assessment
From photos or in person we check the leather type, existing finish, fading and damage, and tell you first whether the colour you want is possible.
Cleaning and stripping
Dirt, oils and the old finish come off so the dye can soak in evenly.
Mixing and dyeing
We mix the colour by hand, test it on a small area, then apply it evenly to suit the condition of the leather.
Finishing
A finish suited to the grain seals the colour. We check the edges and the lining for transfer before returning the piece.
Good to know
- The colour images on this page are simulations: only the colour was changed in a photo of a real calfskin bag. They are not real dye jobs.
- Suede and nubuck cannot be dyed a different colour, so we restore them in their original colour. Smooth leathers such as calfskin and lambskin can change colour after we assess them.
- Dye can only take leather darker than its current colour. A dark bag cannot be dyed to a lighter colour.
- Colours look different on every screen. We agree on the final colour with physical swatches during the consultation.
