Chanel chocolate-bar patent bag — panels and chain leather replaced

Chanel · Leather replacement

These are not dye jobs. Where leather was replaced, the new part can look lighter than before — that is new leather, not leather dyed lighter.

The record

  1. 01Condition on arrival

The patent surface was scratched and clouded, mainly on the sides; the leather woven through the chain was worn

  2. 02Main steps

    1. Taking apart the damaged panels
    2. cutting new patent leather
    3. stitching to shape
    4. replacing the leather in the chain
  3. 03About the work

A black patent Chanel shoulder bag with square “chocolate bar” quilting. Once patent is scratched or its finish clouds, wiping or painting rarely brings back the original gloss, and this bag was damaged mainly along the sides.

The damaged patent was taken apart and replaced with new patent leather of a similar gloss. Patent keeps every needle hole, so the panels were stitched in one go, following the original holes and stitch spacing.

The leather woven through the chain was worn too, so it was rewoven with new leather. The old leather appears in the after photos.
