Repairs

Chanel quilted patent bag — sticky, clouded finish restored

Chanel · Cleaning & refinishing

These are not dye jobs. Where leather was replaced, the new part can look lighter than before — that is new leather, not leather dyed lighter.

The record

  1. 01Condition on arrival

The surface coating had turned sticky and cloudy, with scratches

  2. 02Main steps

    1. Removing the sticky coating
    2. stabilising the surface
    3. reapplying a clear coating
  3. 03About the work

A black patent quilted Chanel shoulder bag. Left too long somewhere hot and humid, the coating on patent softens as if melting, sticks to the hand and turns cloudy. This bag was sticky all over, with grime caught in the scratches.

Stickiness does not wipe off, so the failed coating was removed chemically and the surface stabilised. A clear coating was then reapplied evenly to bring back the gloss.

The after photos were taken on the workshop bench. Compare how evenly the reflections run across each quilted diamond.
