Dye record

Black (scratched, dulled) → BlackRestored in the same colour

  1. 01Condition on arrival

A Ferragamo Gancini handbag whose surface shine had dulled with scratches and marks. A black coating had been added on top in an earlier job.

Fine scratches and a dull shine are visible on the front. Before · photo 2

  2. 02Target colour

The original black, and the original level of patent shine.

  3. 03Colour mixing & process

    1. Removing the earlier finish
    2. Preparing the base
    3. Re-dyeing black
    4. Finishing with a coating
    5. Adjusting the shine

Removing too little of the earlier finish would have left blotches, and removing too much would have damaged the leather, so it was taken back slowly, staying between the two.

The final shine brings the patent gloss back only to its original level.

  4. 04Result

The fine scratches on the front no longer show, and the shine looks even. Before · photo 3 / After · photo 3

  5. 05Limits

No particular limits were noted. Any difference the leather keeps is explained before work begins.

  6. 06About these photos

The first two after photos show the side without the Gancini hardware, so they are not framed like the first two intake photos.

The first intake photo was taken under yellowish light.

Leather can only be dyed darker than its current colour.
