Hermès Béarn H clasp — black finish restored

Hermès · Hardware plating & coating

These are not dye jobs. Where leather was replaced, the new part can look lighter than before — that is new leather, not leather dyed lighter.

The record

  1. 01Condition on arrival

The paint on the H clasp had chipped, exposing metal at the corners

  2. 02Main steps

    1. Smoothing the surface
    2. painting with a dedicated black-chrome paint
    3. finishing
  3. 03About the work

An Hermès Béarn whose H clasp, touched every time the wallet is opened and closed, had lost its black paint, exposing the metal beneath. The metal itself was sound, so the colour could be restored without replacing the clasp.

This hardware contains black chrome, and an ordinary black paint does not give its original depth. It had to be done with a specialist paint that is expensive and demanding to work with.

The step between the remaining colour and the chipped areas was levelled, then the clasp was repainted, bringing back the deep black typical of chrome. The leather body was not touched; only the metal hardware was restored.
