Repairs

Hermès Evelyne — worn strap-end leather replaced

Hermès · Leather replacement

These are not dye jobs. Where leather was replaced, the new part can look lighter than before — that is new leather, not leather dyed lighter.

The record

  1. 01Condition on arrival

The leather tabs at the strap ends had worn and torn, exposing the webbing

  2. 02Main steps

    1. Removing the hardware
    2. cutting and making leather tabs
    3. joining and stitching them to the webbing
    4. refitting the hardware
  3. 03About the work

The canvas webbing strap of an Hermès Evelyne. The leather tabs at the strap ends, where the snap hooks attach, had worn and torn, and the webbing showed where the leather had come away.

The gold snap hooks were removed first and the worn tabs taken off; new tabs of the same shape were made in new leather, wrapped around the webbing ends and stitched. The original snap hooks were refitted.

The intake photos show the damage at both strap ends, and the after photos show the strap reattached to the bag.
