Hermès reversible H belt — buckle re-plated

Hermès · Hardware plating & coating

These are not dye jobs. Where leather was replaced, the new part can look lighter than before — that is new leather, not leather dyed lighter.

The record

  1. 01Condition on arrival

Scratches and stains on the surface of the H buckle

  2. 02Main steps

    1. Smoothing the surface
    2. re-plating
    3. brushed finish
  3. 03About the work

The H buckle of an Hermès reversible belt, black on one side and brown on the other. The brushed matte silver surface had picked up scratches and stains, so up close the tone looked uneven.

The scratched surface was smoothed and re-plated, then given a matte finish with fine lines running in one direction, like the original. A shiny polished finish would make it look like a different buckle.

The leather strap was not touched. The third and fourth intake photos show the fixing parts inside the belt; the after photos show the same parts.
